My Favorite Reading Nook Isn't Just One Place

The Best Reading Nooks Aren't Always in the Living Room

I don't know about you, but my social media is filled with cozy reading nook ideas. Perfect chairs. Perfect blankets. Perfect stacks of books arranged just so.

And every summer, I am reminded that my favorite reading spots are rarely that curated. They're simply places where I can sit comfortably long enough to forget where I am. Sometimes, when the weather is right and the smell of honeysuckle drifts off the bushes, that's outside.

Let’s start with the obvious challenge of outdoor reading:

The bugs.

Nothing pulls you out of a beautiful chapter quite like becoming the main course for a mosquito.

I’ve had decent luck with citronella bracelets, citronella candles, and family-friendly bug spray. They’re not glamorous, but neither is scratching your ankles through the best parts of a good romance.

If I’m reading outdoors, I also prefer paved areas over grass whenever possible. A town square. A common area. A paved path through a park. Less mud. Fewer gnats.

And, of course, I've got a tumbler full of coffee.

One of my favorite reading spots isn’t outdoors at all. It’s a table at my local library. You know the kind. Not officially yours, but yours. Good natural light. Close enough to a window to watch the weather change. Tucked into a corner that most people walk right past. It’s a good day when I arrive and nobody is sitting there. Better still when I leave several chapters later.

Libraries have always felt like one of the few places where sitting quietly for hours is not only accepted but encouraged.

Coffee shops offer a different kind of comfort. I’m a fairly solitary person, apart from my family, but I enjoy reading in coffee shops for reasons I’ve never been able to fully explain.

It’s social, but only technically. Everyone is together and completely separate. The college student studying for an exam. The retirees on their own time. The person working on a laptop. Me, reading (or writing) one more chapter between sips of a hazelnut latte.

There’s something comforting about sharing a room with strangers who are all quietly occupied. No conversation required.

At home, my reading nook is far less impressive than what I find scrolling through the internet. A favorite chair. A soft blanket. A small table beside a window. The table has a drawer, which might be the most important feature. Inside you’ll find my journal, planner, pen, bookmark, hand cream, and whatever random notes I’ve tucked away.

There are also several packets of Sugar in the Raw. I save them for mornings when I’m feeling particularly wild and decide my coffee needs a little something extra.

A good reading nook doesn’t need much. Just enough convenience that you don’t have to get up every ten minutes.

The best reading spots are the ones that remove excuses.

Everything you need is within arm’s reach.

On especially slow days, you’ll find me stretched across the couch. And on rainy days? The couch doesn’t even stand a chance.

Coffee and a book in bed. No guilt. No productivity goals. Just the sound of rain against the window and a story worth staying under the covers for.

Maybe that’s my real reading nook philosophy. Not finding one perfect place. Finding anyplace that lets you get lost in the book. A library table. A coffee shop corner. A chair by the window. A park bench. A bed on a rainy morning.

I’d love to know: where is your favorite place to get lost?
